Bernadete F. Leal, an Artist and Educator, Publishes First Children’s Book,
"A Little Respect – A Fun Journey to Understand Respect"
Tale is inspired by the childhood journey of the author’s daughter
SAN DIEGO - July 18, 2024 - Bernadete F. Leal, author of the children’s book “A Little Respect – A Fun Journey to Understand Respect,” today announced the re-release of the title on Amazon.com. Her book inspires readers to think about the importance of respect using a practical point of view and relatable advice for children. It provides parents with strategies on how they can better communicate with their children on this sensitive but critical developmental subject. Leal, an artist, writer, and educator, has drawn on her profound love of music and storytelling in crafting this special story that will resonate with children and readers of every age.
“The topic of respect requires active and regular demonstrations, practice, and reinforcement,” said Leal. “Respect is not a skill which is learned by rote. Children can listen to definitions, but it is easier to learn life lessons with repetition and examples from the book.”
“A Little Respect” is about a little girl called Anna, who is in third grade and is struggling with the concept of what respect really is. Her teacher sends a note home to her mother about something that happened in school. This presents a teaching moment, where Anna's loving mother playfully helps Anna understand what respect is about and how people can show it in meaningful ways. Mom takes Anna on an unforgettable journey that will profoundly impact on her daughter’s life. The interaction inspires Anna to share her perception of respect with her classmates."
“I love teaching and have always found immense joy nurturing creativity and inspiring my students,” said Leal. “The children and I have embarked on countless storytelling adventures together, and we bask in the magic of sharing creative moments.”
She continued, “My friends, family, and teaching colleagues recognized something special in how I teach children important life lessons and encouraged me to take the publishing leap. Putting pen to paper is exciting. I am so proud to have found the courage to pursue my dream.”
Children and adults will see how Anna, the main character inspired by Leal’s curious and inquisitive daughter, explores respect that she would like and respect that she should give. “I used to spend hours writing poems for my friends, crafting inspiring stories, and sending messages filled with encouragement and hope to those who needed it most,” added Leal. “There is something truly magical when I can touch someone's heart with words that transform into stories and lessons. This is a gift I have always wanted to share.”
Teachers have shared that they appreciated reading “A Little Respect” with 8- and 9-year-olds in their classrooms because the message enhanced the atmosphere of interaction and communication. “I recommend this book as a ‘read aloud’ and as a set for guided reading or literature circles,” said one of the teachers who uses the book in his class.
